INDEPENDENCE ERA COINS & BADGES

WAR OF ESTONIAN INDEPENDENCE 1918 - 1920 WHITE CROSS

This antique silver cigaret case belonged to an elderly Estonian man who served in the Tsarist cavalry. He spent his youth in Siberia and returned to Estonia to fight in the Estonian War of Independence in 1918 - 1920.  The case has the motif of Kalevipoeg on it.  Kalevipoeg is the epic hero of Estonian sagas.  The case is of silver with both Tsarits Russian proof marks and the Estonian lion proof on the top left.

The 2004 Estonian 10 Kroon flag coin commemorates the 120th anniversary of the Estonian tri-color blue, black and white flag.  This coin consists of 28.28 grams of .999 pure silver and is of proof quality encased in a plastic protective holder.  The designer of the coin is Tiit Jürna and the coin was minted in Finland. Only 10,000 were minted for Eesti Pank and there are no plans to mint any more.  Eesti Pank has sold out these popular coins, though there may be dealers who have one for sale - but, at a premium.

The order number of my coin is # 01544 - one is of the earlier purchases. The design of the coin is ingenious in its simplicity. It ties together the Estonian flag, the Estonian people and the Estonian nation as one.

Eesti Pank info page at http://www.eestipank.info has a listing of all the coins and paper monies issued.

This is a memorial coin to the early years of Estonian Independence when inflation was rampant.  As a part of the financial reforms to curb inflation the Estonian government minted a silver coin in 1926.  This is one of the most memorable coins ever minted for the Eesti Vabariik (Free Estonian Republic). The coin is a copy of the historic 1926 coin, and was minted by the Berlin Mint in 2009.  The coin consists of 20 grams of 99.9 % pure silver and in proof condition within a protective plastic container.  Only 10,000 of these coins were minted and issued by the Eesti Pank in 2009.

“Gypsy”,  Väikeste Lõõtspillide Ühing.  Estonian soldier asks a gypsy whether he will ever see his homeland again, or will he see the “Black Bird of Death” instead.  “...a soldier’s fate is a mass grave...”.  One of the best army songs I have heard.
