Akopopv, andro   age: 85

Served as a sergeant in the First Ukrainian Front, initially in the infantry and later in a tank battalion.  Decorated with the Order of the Patriotic War, and two medals for valor.

THEIR OLD TIRED EYES REVEAL MEMORIES OF DAYS LONG AGO - MEMORIES OF DEEDS NEVER FORGOTTEN - MEMORIES OF COMRADES DEPARTED - MEMORIES OF A GLORIOUS PAST WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG AND HEROIC.

INTERVIEWS WITH VETERANS AT THE VAKE PARK MEMORIAL ON MAY 9, 2010

THESE ARE SOME OF THE HEROS AND HEROINES OF THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR WHO STOPPED THE INVADING GERMANS AT THE GATES OF MOSCOW, DESTROYED HITLER’S ARROGANT 6TH ARMY AT  STALINGRAD, AND SMASHED THEIR WAY INTO BERLIN.  THOSE HEADY DAYS ARE ONLY MEMORIES TO THOSE WHO NOW SIT SILENTLY OR LIMP WITH A CANE.  I HOPE THAT THE YOUNGER GENERATION OF GEORGIANS NEVER FORGETS THE SACRIFICES OF THESE HEROS AND HEROINES, AND THAT THEY HAVE THE SAME PATRIOTISM AND COURAGE TO PROTECT GEORGIA FROM FOREIGN INTRIGUES THAT TODAY THREATEN THEIR NATION.
